I thought I saw the pattern, found a word even but it is not the correct one it seems. A nudge? Please

Maybe it's not the answer, but an instruction...

Found a word, and did what it suggested - now I seem to have a rather  -ish sentence with some maths involved. Right track? The answer box doesn't like the sum or its synonyms :(

For those who've worked out the message but still struggling - what did you do to generate the message? Better do it again.

I've got a four letter word that can also be an instruction. But which way? Or into what? And how have people ended up with multi-word phrases? My brain hurts - and it's only round 1!

Apply, reapply, and reapply again. You might be able to make something then from what otherwise doesn't look like words.

I have four four-character strings, all looking exactly alik... oops sorry, wrong game. Start again...

Actually, by following the instruction in two different ways I've got two lots of strings that look nothing like anything. They might work well as the sort of computer generated password that no one can ever remember, but other than that...
